CSEP (Certified Special Events Professional): Certification Guide for Events Professionals

If you’ve built a career producing weddings, galas, corporate parties, or any other kind of special or social event — and you want a credential that proves you can run the entire process, not just one piece of it — there’s one designation built for exactly that: CSEP, the Certified Special Events Professional, issued by ILEA (the International Live Events Association).

Established in 1993, the CSEP designation recognizes event professionals who have demonstrated broad, practical knowledge across the full range of special-event work — strategy, planning, execution, risk, and client-facing communication — rather than expertise in just one discipline. ILEA describes CSEP as “the only certification that signifies broad knowledge across all facets of the special events industry.”

Eligibility Requirements

• Minimum five (5) years of full-time, practical experience in the events industry, documented with a resume/CV or an employer letter.
• Candidates with less than 5 years of experience must submit the same experience documentation plus one additional supporting document: an official or unofficial transcript, proof of a relevant degree or certificate, a signed letter from faculty confirming program completion, or a letter of recommendation from a current, active CSEP.
• All candidates must agree to uphold ILEA’s Standards of Professional Conduct and Ethics.

Exam Format & Process

1. Create an account at ileahub.com.
2. Complete and submit the CSEP application along with your supporting documentation. Applications take 5–10 business days to review, so ILEA recommends applying well ahead of your target exam date.
3. Once approved, you’ll receive instructions to schedule your exam through Meazure, ILEA’s online testing platform (same login as ileahub.com). You have 90 days from approval to schedule and sit the exam.
4. Sit the exam: 115 multiple-choice questions with a 150-minute time limit, delivered entirely online with remote proctoring, 365 days a year (some blackout dates apply).

ILEA publishes an official CSEP Exam Blueprint that candidates use to self-assess and study — it’s the most reliable source for exactly what the exam covers, and it’s available on ILEA’s Prepare page along with a recommended reading list and an optional practice exam.

If you don’t pass on the first attempt, each retake costs $350, with a mandatory 30-day wait between attempts, and requires re-submitting your application (ILEA provides a discount code so you don’t pay the application fee twice).

Validity & Renewal

CSEP credentials must be recertified every three (3) years. ILEA offers two paths:

• By documentation: Show a minimum of three years of continued professional experience, plus 40 total points earned across Continuing Education and Leadership & Involvement categories (at least 20 of those points must come from Continuing Education). Recertification applications are subject to audit, so keep backup documentation for six months after approval.
• By exam: Available if a certification has lapsed or a candidate doesn’t have enough points to recertify by documentation — this path must be requested by emailing ILEA before the certification expires.

Recertification fees range from $300 (on-time, by documentation) up to $350 plus a $350 exam fee (by exam, within 30 days of expiration). If a CSEP lapses for more than 30 days, the credential is lost entirely and the individual must reapply and test as a brand-new candidate.
