The Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is issued by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and is widely regarded as the gold-standard credential in project management. It acknowledges professionals who are skilled at managing the people, processes, and business priorities of projects, regardless of industry, methodology, or geography — predictive, hybrid, or agile. PMI reports more than 1.7 million active PMP holders worldwide, making it the world’s most widely held project management certification.
PMI updated the PMP Exam Content Outline (ECO) for 2026; some third-party training providers report the refreshed exam and a fee adjustment took effect around mid-to-late 2026. Candidates should confirm the current exam version and fee on PMI’s official application portal before applying, since PMI does not publish exact figures on its public marketing pages.
PMP is aimed at anyone who leads and directs projects — project managers, program coordinators, delivery leads, and event professionals who run large-scale exhibitions, conferences, or activations as time-boxed projects with defined scope, budget, and stakeholders. Unlike the events-specific certifications in this series (CMP, CEM, CSEP and similar), PMP is a cross-industry credential: it validates project leadership skills that transfer directly to managing a major event as a project, with formal scope, schedule, risk, and stakeholder management.
For events professionals running large or complex programs — national exhibitions, giga-project activations, multi-venue conferences — PMI notes that PMP holders report higher median salaries than non-certified peers (PMI cites a 17% premium, based on its own U.S.-focused salary survey data), which is worth weighing alongside the events-specific credentials already covered in this series.
Candidates need ONE of the following combinations of education and project management experience (experience must be accumulated within PMI’s eligibility window and does not double-count overlapping project time):
All candidates also need 35 hours of Project Professional training, which can be completed through PMI’s own on-demand exam prep course, a self-paced course from any provider, or (starting 1 December 2026) a live instructor-led class delivered specifically by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited higher-education program. An active CAPM certification also satisfies the training requirement.
After PMI approves the application — which is subject to a random audit process — candidates pay the certification fee and receive a 1-year eligibility window to sit the exam, with up to three attempts allowed within that year (repayment of fees applies to the second and third attempts). The exam itself is:
PMI reviews a percentage of applications through an audit process that can request supporting documentation (degree copies, supervisor sign-offs, training certificates) before granting exam eligibility.
PMI does not publish the exact PMP exam fee on its public certification pages — pricing is shown once a candidate begins the application on PMI’s member portal and varies by membership status and region. Multiple training-provider sources report that PMI raised its PMP fees around August 2026, from roughly $405 to $445 USD for PMI members and from roughly $555 to $675 USD for non-members, alongside the refreshed 2026 exam content outline; PMI membership itself runs roughly $139–$159 USD per year and reduces the exam fee. Treat these figures as indicative only and confirm the current fee for your country directly on PMI’s official application portal before budgeting. Late rescheduling (within 30 days of an exam appointment) carries a separate US$70 administrative fee per PMI’s Certification Handbook.
PMP certification is maintained through PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. Holders must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year renewal cycle, through activities such as learning, teaching, presenting, reading, volunteering, or content creation, and renew before the cycle ends to keep the certification active.
