Certificate in Meeting Management (CMM): Certification Guide for Events Professionals

CMM Certificate in Meeting Management badge, issued by MPI

For meeting professionals who’ve already proven they can execute flawlessly, the next challenge is proving they can lead. That’s the gap the CMM — the Certificate in Meeting Management — is built to close. Issued by Meeting Professionals International (MPI) in partnership with San Diego State University (SDSU), the CMM is an executive-level credential aimed squarely at senior meeting, event, and business-travel professionals who are ready to operate at the strategic and enterprise level rather than the logistics level. MPI relaunched the program in 2026 in partnership with SDSU — home to the university’s Master’s in Meeting and Event Management — with a redesigned, more immersive cohort model after five years of a fully virtual format.

Unlike some of the credentials in this series, CMM is technically a certificate program rather than a certification: MPI’s own historical program materials describe it as carrying no ongoing recertification requirement once earned, distinguishing it from credentials like the CMP that require periodic renewal. (This detail comes from MPI’s older CMM FAQ; professionals should confirm directly with MPI Academy, since the program has been substantially redesigned since that FAQ was published.)

Who It’s For & Why It Matters

CMM isn’t an entry point — it’s a deliberate step up for professionals who’ve already built a career in meetings and events and are now moving into, or already occupy, director, vice-president, agency-leadership, or business-owner roles. MPI positions it explicitly as executive education, not continuing education: candidates are expected to be “accountable for results” at an enterprise level, not primarily responsible for event logistics. The curriculum focuses on aligning events with business strategy, influencing C-suite and cross-functional stakeholders, improving the financial performance of event portfolios, and leading teams through organizational change — skills that sit above the operational competencies validated by credentials like the CMP.

MPI is selective about admission by design: applications are reviewed individually and cohorts are intentionally kept small (MPI has previously capped cohorts around 50 candidates) to preserve a high-caliber peer group. For professionals aiming at director-and-above roles, MPI frames CMM as a natural pairing with, or next step after, the CMP.

Eligibility Requirements for the CMM Certification

Admission to CMM is application-based rather than exam-based, with candidates required to demonstrate all three of the following:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in the meeting, event, or business travel industry
  • 3+ years of management experience
  • 2+ years of profit-and-loss (P&L) responsibility

Applicants must also submit three supporting documents: a personal statement, a letter of recommendation from a professional colleague or supervisor (on official company letterhead), and an up-to-date résumé that clearly demonstrates the required experience. There is no separate academic-degree requirement — admission is based on professional seniority and scope of responsibility, evaluated by MPI/SDSU program staff.

Exam Format & Process

CMM has no written exam. Instead, candidates complete a structured, cohort-based executive-education program. As redesigned for 2026, the program runs as a hybrid over roughly three months and includes:

  • A 2–3 day in-person immersion with the cohort
  • Roughly 10 weeks of 90-minute online sessions (synchronous and asynchronous)
  • A capstone project applying the coursework to a real workplace challenge

The curriculum centers on leadership, strategy, and innovation, with expanded modules on conflict resolution and design thinking in the current version. Registration deadlines fall a month before each cohort’s start date to allow time for pre-work, and an approved application stays valid for 12 months, giving candidates a full year to choose a cohort without reapplying. MPI runs at least four CMM cohorts per year.

Cost

  • CMM cohort tuition: $4,500 USD (2026 pricing, per MPI’s official program page)
  • Scholarships: $2,000 CMM scholarships are available through the MPI Foundation to MPI planner members accepted into the program
  • Payment plans: available case-by-case — candidates should contact cmm@mpiweb.org

Full tuition must be paid before registration closes for the chosen cohort. As with any professional-development investment, confirm current pricing directly with MPI Academy before applying, since program fees and inclusions have changed with each redesign of the curriculum.

Validity & Renewal

This is the credential’s defining feature: once earned, the CMM designation may be used indefinitely, with no continuing-education or recertification requirement to maintain it — a deliberate distinction MPI has drawn between a “certificate” (CMM) and a “certification” (like the CMP, which must be renewed every five years). That said, this specific detail is documented in MPI’s older program FAQ rather than the current 2026 program page, so professionals should verify directly with MPI Academy that the no-renewal policy still applies to the redesigned SDSU-partnered program before relying on it.

How to Register for the CMM

Registration and cohort scheduling run through MPI’s official program page, which lists all upcoming cohort dates and links to each session’s registration form:

Apply for the $2,000 CMM scholarship: https://bbgm-apply.yourcausegrants.com/apply/programs/1cdc78bc-1cff-49f2-976b-1cb93a853553

Candidates submit their personal statement, letter of recommendation, and résumé for review; once approved, they have a year to select and register for a cohort session.

Program details reflect MPI’s published information as of August 2026. The CMM was substantially redesigned earlier in 2026 in partnership with San Diego State University, so professionals should confirm current fees, format, and renewal policy directly with MPI Academy (cmm@mpiweb.org) before applying.
