Riyadh and Jeddah dominate most conversations about Saudi Arabia’s events market, but the Eastern Province is quietly building the infrastructure to become the Kingdom’s third major MICE and live-events destination. A $1 billion stadium nearing completion in Al Khobar, an existing exhibition center in Dammam, and an industrial base that already runs its own steady conference circuit are converging at a moment when Riyadh and Jeddah venues are running close to full.
A $1 billion anchor for the eastern seaboard
Aramco Stadium in Al Khobar is racing toward a 2026 completion, with more than 11,000 workers on site and the project recently passing 10 million safe working hours, according to Construction Business News Middle East. The 47,000-seat venue, designed by Populous, is being built as more than a football ground: it is paired with an adjacent convention centre and includes climate-control systems designed to make it usable as a year-round events venue rather than a matchday-only facility. It is scheduled to host matches in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, with an eye toward a role in the 2034 FIFA World Cup as well.
That stadium-and-convention-centre combination sits alongside the Eastern Province’s existing MICE infrastructure, including the Dhahran International Exhibition Center in Dammam, which already hosts trade shows and corporate events tied to the region’s industrial base.
Why the timing matters
A Research and Markets industry report published in January 2026 put venue utilization at 68% in Riyadh and 61% in Jeddah as of 2025 — a level that leaves organizers with a shrinking pool of open dates in the Kingdom’s two busiest event markets. The same report projects Saudi Arabia’s event management sector to grow from an estimated USD 2.77 billion in 2026 to USD 3.92 billion by 2031, with giga-projects nationwide expected to add more than 100 new event-capable facilities to the supply pipeline over that period.
The Eastern Province brings a built-in demand base that Riyadh and Jeddah don’t have in the same way: Saudi Aramco’s extensive supplier and contractor network around Dammam and Al Khobar already generates a recurring stream of technical conferences, supplier expos, and energy-sector gatherings independent of the Kingdom’s broader tourism and entertainment calendar.
What organizers and vendors should watch
For event professionals used to defaulting to Riyadh or Jeddah, the Eastern Province’s build-out changes the calculus in a few concrete ways:
- Venue availability. With Riyadh and Jeddah venues booked well in advance, Eastern Province facilities are likely to offer more flexible dates and, in the near term, more competitive rates.
- A built-in corporate and technical audience. Aramco’s supplier ecosystem gives conference organizers a ready base of attendees for industrial, energy, and technical events without having to build demand from scratch.
- Asian Cup lead time. With the stadium targeting completion ahead of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, AV, production, hospitality, and logistics vendors have a defined window to establish an Eastern Province presence before demand peaks.
- A genuine convention-centre option, not just a stadium. The adjacent convention centre means the venue is designed for corporate and exhibition use beyond matchdays, not only sports and concerts.
